Ocular Tissue Advisory Group Research Subgroup

Information about the OTAG Research Subgroup and project proposal process.

The Ocular Tissue Advisory Group (OTAG) Research Subgroup plays a key role in advancing research in corneal transplantation and improving patient care. Composed of corneal transplant surgeons and statisticians, this subgroup prioritises research integrity.

We support research initiatives by ensuring studies are well-designed, performed, and evaluated in accordance with international standards. Through expert guidance and constructive feedback to those proposing research projects, we aim not only to make research projects suitable for publication in peer-reviewed medical journals but also to ensure they have a meaningful impact on clinical practice and policy development.

Our research primarily relies on data from the UK Transplant Registry, managed by NHSBT. Surgeons performing corneal transplants are asked to complete a standard data collection form at the time of surgery and follow-up forms at 1, 2, and 5 years post-transplant. These forms capture key transplant details and follow-up data on critical events, such as episodes of allograft rejection, graft failure, visual acuity, and patient mortality. We review and approve research proposals submitted to NHSBT using data from the UK Transplant Registry and work closely with co-authors to analyse transplant data for the accepted projects.

Here is a list of publications from the last 10 years, which you may find helpful to explore through our website.
