By placing the lungs on the EVLP system, this study investigates new ways to assess lungs for possible signs of inflammation and infection before transplantation. This study also delivers treatments to the lungs to determine how well damaged lungs absorb certain treatments and whether these improve their function.

This study can receive lungs that have been removed for transplantation and then deemed unsuitable. These lungs are offered to studies such as this one through the National Allocation Scheme.
This study can also receive lungs from organ donors where their lungs have been deemed untransplantable before removal, and their family have given authorisation.
Removal of the lungs specifically for this research study can only occur in hospitals in Scotland.
